He stepped down as music director in 2016 after struggling with health problems, but was fired in 2018 from his reduced role with the Met after three men accused him of abusing them as teenagers as far back as 1968.
He also conducted some of the major orchestras of America and Europe, most notably the Munich Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He made two recordings with the London Stmphony Orchestra, and others with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Moscow Symphony and Scottish Chamber Orchestra.Levine, considered the foremost American conductor of his time and perhaps the most celebrated since Leonard Bernstein, led about 2,500 performances of more than 80 different operas since his Met debut in 1971, more than anyone else since it was founded in 1880. For more than a decade he conducted annually at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. He was also Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for Classical Tahoe, a festival featuring musicians from the Met orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Seattle Symphony, LA Phil and other ensembles. Two years ago he became music director of the Mayshad Festival in Marrakech, Morocco. From 2003 to 2012, he was artistic director of Arizona Opera. Revzen conducted the Minnesota Chorale, as well as the Minnesota Orchestra and the St Paul Chamber orchestra. Read: Metropolitan Opera Orchestra violist dies of coronavirus On the Met’s conducting staff since 1999, Revzen made his Met conducting debut in April 2017 in a production of Eugene Onegin starring Anna Netrebko and Peter Mattei. He was also Assistant Conductor in 2017/18 for productions of Puccini’s Turandot, Mozart’s Magic Flute, Bellini’s Norma, Massenet’s Cendrillon and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and, in 2018-19, Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West, Boito’s Mefistofele, Verdi’s Rigoletto and Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito. The Metropolitan Opera conductor Joel Revzen died last night of coronavirus.
